Tanis Saxby

My sculptures reflect this ongoing journey of discovery. Porcelain has become more than a medium: it has become a teacher and a guide, continually challenging me to experiment, adapt, and deepen my artistic vision. Its delicate and unpredictable nature keeps me curious, focused, and learning. Through porcelain, I have learned to take risks, embrace the unexpected, and persevere, experiences that continue to shape both my work and my growth as an artist.

Tanis Saxby is a Canadian sculptor currently living and working in Vancouver. Her artistic discipline is rooted in porcelain clay sculpture, guided by a deeply sensory approach to making. She studied at the University of Victoria and the Kootenay School of the Arts, further developing her practice through a residency in Vallauris, France, and perfume creation in Florence, Italy. These experiences inform her integration of hand-distilled floral oils, raw silk, and crafted pearls into her porcelain sculptures.

Her work explores sculpture as a sensory experience, extending beyond the visual to engage touch and scent. Organic, abstract forms evoking marine structures and botanical growth draw viewers into a close, physical encounters with the work. Celebrated for her technical virtuosity and international reach, Saxby has been commissioned for high profile installations in Singapore, Saudi Arabia, and Monaco. In 2026, she published My Mother’s Hands: A Sculptor’s Journey to Becoming a Six Sensory Artist, a reflection on the familial lineage and intuitive, material led philosophy that grounds her studio practice in Vancouver.

Saxby’s talk, Our Unique Creative Journeys, reflects on her development as a porcelain sculptor and the experiences, challenges, risks, and decisions that have shaped her creative practice. Through experimentation, setbacks, and successes, she has learned to trust her instincts, embrace uncertainty, and find a path that is uniquely her own.
