Angelo di Petta was born in Colle d’Anchise, which is located in the Molise region of central Italy. He immigrated to Toronto with his family in 1956. He majored in ceramics at the Ontario College of Art (OCAD University), graduating in 1972. He was awarded three scholarships to study industrial ceramics in Faenza, Italy in 1973 and 1975.

His teaching career at OCAD University began in 1975 and continued until his retirement in 2012. He taught courses in mould-making, domestic ceramics, ceramic materials, 3D design, applied imagery/surface and rendering/drawing. di Petta has also shared his knowledge, expertise and experience through workshops and lectures in Canada and the United States. He has been the subject of various articles, and his work has been published in numerous books and magazines on ceramics. He has exhibited his work through numerous solo and group exhibitions nationally and internationally, and he has executed major public commissions in Canada and the United States. He resides with his family in a rural setting near Millbrook, Ontario, northeast of Toronto. The subtleties of landscape and seasonal changes experienced by the artist in this rural environment are reflected in his work. This is a rare opportunity to hear in person from a major ceramic master in Canada.
di Petta’s talk, Ceramics: Material, Process, Inspiration and Design, traces his discovery and subsequent journey in clay and its varied processes and applications. In the mid-seventies, he settled on model-making, mould-making, slip-casting and press-moulding. These are processes he has continued to use throughout his career, at times incorporating surface embellishments that are extensions of the making process.
Angelo di Petta’s talk will take place in Studio 102 at the Shadbolt Centre for the Arts, (6450 Deer Lake Avenue, Burnaby, BC) on Sunday, June 28, 2026, at 6:45 pm. We hope to see you there!
