My pots are concerned with the relationship between surface and form, the essential elements of the potter. The surfaces are tactile and inherently decorative, formed in the firing process where ceramic materials are transformed to glaze in the fire. My forms are simple and uncomplicated, designed to complement the glazed surfaces such that neither dominates the other in an attempt to create some sort of balance between the two elements.

Peter Wilson earned his Doctor of Creative Arts from the University of Western Sydney in New South Wales, Australia. He has participated in in numerous group and solo exhibitions in Australia, Pakistan, and Canada, and in residencies in Italy, Pakistan, and the UK. He has received significant awards for his unique ceramics, which are in private and public collections in Canada, South Korea, Pakistan, Japan, and Australia. For many years, he was a senior lecturer at Charles Sturt University in New South Wales, and his commissioned ceramic tiles grace a number of public buildings.

Peter Wilson, Pot, porcelain, crystalline glaze with copper and manganese

Sparked by an early appreciation of nature and studies in geology and palaeontology, Peter developed his work though patience, experience, and continuous technical experimentation, fueled by his curiosity and respect for design and craftsmanship. Focusing primarily on the vessel, he favours simple, uncomplicated forms that complement the extraordinary ash and crystalline glaze surfaces for which he is best known. Making use of local materials such as marble, rhyolite, basalt, and wood ash, he writes that his “major interest in ceramics lies in the effects of the fire, effects that are uniquely ceramic and which cannot be reproduced by the brush or any other method.”

Dr. Wilson’s talk Materiality, intuition, heart, head and hands: seduced by the magic of clay will focus on the various stages of his life as a potter: continuous learning, skill development, understanding materials, the fire, glazes, the striving for perfection, finding a direction, and the need for constant renewal, what he calls “trying to fix a silent poem in clay.”
